I promised myself that on my return from holiday I would get back into some serious marathon training, so I arranged to go for a run with my mate Tony. This arrangement had happened over a few drinks, so when Tony suggested an early morning run I took it with a pinch of salt – as Tonys reputation would suggest, he doesn’t ‘do’ early mornings!
At 7:30 on Saturday morning I lay in bed half asleep, wondering if I had heard a knock at the door. Sure enough I heard another ‘tap, tap, tap’. I got up to get my phone and couldn’t believe it when I found about 10 missed calls from Tony and a selfie of him stood at the front door! I let him in to be greeted with a take away coffee and the tune of ‘Chariots of Fire’! There was going to be no getting out of this!
I put on my running gear and off we went, telling Helen I’d be back within the hour. 3 hours later we still hadn’t returned! Not one to do things by halves, Tony had set his heart on running to his workplace at the end of the port way and back – for those of you who don’t know, this is around 13 miles (half a marathon)! Not what I was expecting to do on our first run together!
We are planning to go again one evening this week so I dread to think what time I’ll get home! Probably the other side of midnight.
I know that no excuse is going to get me out of training with relentless Tony once he’s decided he’s going to do it! Maybe this is going to be just what I need to get me Everest Marathon fit!!
